Sports Director/Host
Derek has spent almost seven years in the Indianapolis sports radio market, and has been with XL 950 since 2005. He has been the solo host of the afternoon-drive show The Zone since May of 2009, after previously co-hosting the show with Greg Rakestraw. He’s also hosted shows such as the Xtra Large Lunch, The Rock Bottom NFL Pregame Show, and High School Friday Night. During his tenure at 950, he has covered everything from Lawrence North’s basketball dynasty to Butler's memorable repeat runs to the 2010 and 2011 NCAA title game.
He is a graduate of Indiana University, where he was a member of WIUS (now WIUX) – the student-run radio station – for all four years of college, and did various play-by-play including football and men’s/women’s basketball. He hosted several shows, including the Thursday Night Sports Happy Hour during his junior year, and was involved with the student television station, IUSTV. Prior to coming over to WXLW, Derek spent time at WHCC and WIBC.
Derek is a Connecticut native, born and raised in the lovely suburban town of Trumbull, better known as the home of the Chris Drury-led 1989 Little League World Champions, the guy that created P90X, and Kevin Nealon’s parents. Derek is an avid New York Giants, Knicks, and Yankees fan to this day. He enjoys trashy reality TV, triple-decker club sandwiches, and also once dressed up as Marv Albert for Career Day as a 4th grader.
